NJBEC Celebrates John R Lewis Voter Empowerment Act of New Jersey

The New Jersey Black Empowerment Coalition (NJBEC) proudly celebrates a historic moment for our state and our democracy with the enactment of the John R. Lewis Voter Empowerment Act of New Jersey—one of the strongest statewide voting rights laws in the nation.

Named in honor of civil rights icon Congressman John R. Lewis, whose lifelong commitment to protecting the right to vote inspired generations of Americans, this landmark legislation reinforces a simple but powerful principle: every eligible voter deserves equal access to the ballot box. The Act establishes comprehensive protections designed to ensure that every New Jerseyan can participate freely, fairly, and without discrimination in our democratic process.

Protecting the Fundamental Right to Vote

The John R. Lewis Voter Empowerment Act strengthens New Jersey’s commitment to fair elections by expanding safeguards against voter discrimination and intimidation while increasing transparency and accountability throughout the election process.

Among its many provisions, the law:

● Protects voters from discrimination and deceptive election practices.
● Establishes a statewide preclearance process requiring jurisdictions with a history of voting discrimination to obtain approval before implementing certain election changes.
● Expands language accessibility so more New Jersey residents can fully participate in elections.
● Strengthens protections against practices that dilute the voting power of historically underrepresented communities.
● Creates greater transparency through improved election data and public reporting.
● Affirms that voting is a fundamental right deserving of the highest level of protection under New Jersey law.

At a time when voting rights continue to face challenges across the country, New Jersey has chosen to lead by ensuring that access to democracy is protected for every eligible resident—regardless of race, ethnicity, language, or zip code.

Honoring the Legacy of John R. Lewis

Congressman John Lewis often reminded America to “make good trouble” in the pursuit of justice. Throughout his life, he risked everything to secure voting rights for future generations, believing that the right to vote is the foundation upon which all other rights are built.

By naming this legislation in his honor, New Jersey recognizes that protecting democracy requires continued vigilance and an unwavering commitment to equal opportunity for every voter.
