Building Wealth: NJBEC Financial Empowerment Series Highlights the Power of Money Management

NJBEC welcomed guest speaker Rodney Abrams to Essex County Community College for an important conversation about financial literacy, money management, and creating pathways toward generational wealth.

On August 6, 2026, the New Jersey Black Empowerment Coalition (NJBEC) continued its Financial Empowerment Series at Essex County Community College, bringing community members together for a meaningful discussion about money management, financial stability, and the importance of building and protecting wealth.

The evening featured guest speaker Rodney Abrams, who shared practical strategies designed to help individuals and families take greater control of their financial futures.

One of the most important messages of the evening was simple but powerful:

“Money management is not about how much money you have. It is about how you use the money you have.”

Understanding Money Management

Financial empowerment begins with understanding how to make informed decisions with the resources we have today.

Money management is a system for making thoughtful decisions about earning, spending, saving, investing, and managing debt. Developing these skills can help individuals and families create greater financial stability, prepare for unexpected expenses, reduce financial stress, and work toward long-term goals.

The conversation emphasized that financial success does not begin only after someone reaches a certain income level. It begins with developing the knowledge, habits, and systems necessary to make informed financial decisions.

When individuals understand where their money is going and develop a plan for where they want it to take them, they can begin building a stronger financial foundation.

His goal is to help individuals and families build financial confidence, reduce financial stress, and make informed decisions that support their personal and family goals.

Building Black Wealth Is About More Than Money

For NJBEC, financial empowerment is also part of a larger conversation about building Black wealth and addressing the racial wealth gap.

Building Black wealth is about more than the amount of money in a bank account. It is about opportunity, ownership, security, and generational prosperity.

Creating stronger financial futures requires ensuring that our communities have access to information and resources around:

● Financial literacy
● Saving and money management
● Responsible debt management
● Homeownership
● Investing
● Entrepreneurship
● Business ownership
● Building and protecting generational wealth

These tools can help individuals move beyond short-term financial survival and toward greater stability, ownership, and opportunity.

Financial education alone cannot erase the historic and systemic barriers that have contributed to the racial wealth gap. However, expanding access to financial knowledge, resources, and opportunities is an important part of empowering individuals and strengthening communities.

Wealth With a Purpose

A central theme of NJBEC’s Financial Empowerment Series is that wealth should have a purpose.

Building wealth can create opportunities that extend far beyond one individual. It can help families become more financially secure, support entrepreneurship and homeownership, create opportunities for the next generation, and contribute to stronger communities.

When families have greater financial stability, they are better positioned to plan for the future, respond to unexpected challenges, invest in opportunities, and create a foundation that can benefit future generations.

That is why conversations about financial empowerment are also conversations about community empowerment.

Continuing the Conversation

NJBEC extends its sincere thanks to Rodney Abrams for sharing his experience, knowledge, and practical approach to money management with our community.

We also thank Essex County Community College for hosting the August 6 Financial Empowerment Series event and everyone who attended and participated in this important conversation.

The Financial Empowerment Series reflects NJBEC’s continued commitment to connecting New Jersey communities with information, education, and resources that can create meaningful and lasting change.

When individuals have the knowledge and tools to build, grow, and protect wealth, families become stronger, opportunities expand, and communities become more empowered.

NJBEC looks forward to continuing these conversations and creating opportunities for New Jersey residents to learn, connect, and build toward a stronger financial future.

Together, we can build knowledge. We can build opportunity. We can build wealth. And we can build stronger communities for generations to come.
